Seeing 20/20 does not always mean your eyes are completely healthy. Some eye diseases can develop quietly while central vision still seems clear. At Insight Eyecare, we encourage patients in Las Vegas to look beyond the eye chart and make routine eye health evaluations part of protecting their long-term vision.
Glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration are two conditions where early detection can be especially important. A comprehensive eye exam allows us to evaluate structures inside the eye and look for changes that may not yet be affecting everyday vision.
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve. In many cases, early glaucoma does not cause obvious pain or noticeable vision changes. Peripheral vision may gradually become affected before a person realizes something is wrong.
That is why glaucoma screening involves more than simply checking whether you can read the smallest letters on an eye chart. A thorough evaluation may consider eye pressure, optic nerve appearance, corneal thickness and other findings depending on your individual risk.
At our Las Vegas practice, glaucoma management is part of our eye care services, and we use advanced technology to help evaluate ocular health.
Age-related macular degeneration, commonly called AMD, affects the macula - the central portion of the retina responsible for detailed vision. Early AMD may produce few or no noticeable symptoms. As the condition progresses, people may notice distortion, blurred central vision or difficulty recognizing fine details.
Regular eye exams become increasingly important with age because retinal changes can sometimes be identified before they significantly interfere with daily activities.
Risk can vary based on age, family history, smoking history and other health factors. We take these factors into account when deciding how closely your eye health should be monitored.
Our Las Vegas office uses advanced diagnostic technology that can give us additional information about the retina, optic nerve and other structures inside the eye. Depending on your needs, testing may include:
OCT imaging to provide detailed cross-sectional views of retinal and optic nerve structures
Optomap retinal imaging for a wide-field view of the retina
Digital retinal photography to document and monitor changes over time
Eye pressure measurements as part of glaucoma evaluation
Additional testing based on your personal and family eye health history
These technologies complement a comprehensive examination rather than replacing one. Comparing findings over time can be particularly useful because subtle changes may become more apparent from one visit to the next.
Visual acuity measures how clearly you can see at a particular distance. It does not tell us everything about the health of your retina, optic nerve or other internal eye structures.
Someone can have excellent central vision and still be developing an eye condition that requires monitoring. This is one reason we recommend regular comprehensive eye exams even when your glasses prescription seems unchanged and you have no noticeable symptoms.
For patients in Las Vegas, routine eye care gives us an opportunity to establish a baseline, monitor changes and determine whether additional testing or follow-up is appropriate.
